Meditation
Meditation
If Barre is my yin and yoga is my yang, then meditation is the glue that holds them both together. And honestly, I didn’t realize how important this part of my health and fitness equation was until only recently.
Truth be told, I just started meditating a year and a half ago. So I am not going to pretend to be an expert here. What I can tell you, is that after only this short period of time integrating meditation into my daily routine, the results have been down-right shocking.
When I am meditating on a regular basis I feel more calm, more grounded, and more at peace. But what surprises me the most is the absolute clarity that I have. I don’t think that I am alone when I say that often-times my mind is a jumbled mess of thoughts bouncing around without any real direction. In turn, these thoughts often become overwhelming, stress-inducing anxiety. When I meditate everything is so clear. It’s like someone comes into my mind and blows all the smoke and fog completely out of the way. I can see what I’m doing, where I’m going, and what I want so clearly. And my focus is on point. I get so much more done so much more efficiently. I wish I would have known about these magical benefits of meditation a long time ago so I could have been reaping the rewards of this magnificent feeling for longer. But I know about it now and you couldn’t stop me from meditating now if you tried.
Finally, there are so many other benefits of meditation: stress reduction, enhanced self-awareness, spiritual growth, pain management, brain health, and more. But for me, it is the clarity, the improved focus and the ability to concentrate with ease that just absolutely blows me away. And yes, to answer your question – if I go a few days or weeks without meditating, I do notice the fog and clouds rolling back in. It’s crazy. I am now an absolute believer and I hope that I can make one out of you too. All it takes is a willingness to try. And I’ve made that easy for you…

Hints & Tips for starting your meditation practice
Just do it! I made excuses for years. “I don’t have time, I don’t know how, I don’t think it will work,” etc. etc. JUST DO IT.
Don’t second guess yourself. I used to think I was doing it wrong. You really can’t meditate “wrong.” If you are simply breathing and allowing your mind to rest, you are doing it right.
Use a timer. All meditations are different. Sometimes you will feel super focused and like you could stay in your practice for hours. Other times feel like an eternity and you will just want to get up and leave. A timer will keep you honest.
Set up a nice place to practice. Keep it clean and pretty. It should feel welcoming, warm, and safe. Maybe with a cushion, a Buddha statue, some fresh flowers and incense. Whatever makes you happy…
Don’t give up! And be patient! These go hand in hand. Changes don’t happen overnight, but it can be difficult to be patient if you are not feeling any different. You need to be consistent with your practice to feel and experience the results. Good things come to those who wait…
Make it a part of your routine. I prefer mornings as it feels like a good way to start my day and before my brain really gets moving. But many people prefer to end their day with it.
Start slow. 5 minutes a day is plenty.
Practice different methods. Guided meditations can be amazing. But sometimes just sitting in silence is all you need. Play around with what works best for you.
